Charterhouse - MAG
Designer Comment: Eliott Peterken
A striking image to illustrate the horrors that are faced every day by people, especially children, throughout the world. The call to action of the simple web address will go some way to explaining what the campaign is about, without giving too much away, thus maintaining interest and driving people to the website where they will learn more about this worthy cause.

VOTE MAG DAILY! Many other ads (including prostate cancer) are meritorious so many would be good winners, but I am voting for one that I think will have an impact internationally, is effective visually, will save lives and limbs and provides A VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS in the dozens and dozens of countries around the world affected by landmines, cluster munitions and other ERW that will be sustainably and permanently (there IS a light at the end of the landmine tunnel) helped by MAG and other humanitarian demining organizations, like Norwegian People's Aid, Danish Church Aid and Handicap International. VOTE DAILY FOR MAG! SBW PS: Danny (17 June) - glad you liked my original comments (12 June). Hope you are still voting daily. I have been remiss for a few days, unfortunately. SBW

Paul | 22 June 2009
This is a visually strong ad for an important subject but it's not the best idea on this site. How often do you see teddy bears wandering across an area where there are landmines? The cancer ad is also for an important charity but it's also a stronger idea. The best idea should win and there are a few ads on here with better ideas.

Phillip, you are not alone in wishing to see the Prostate Cancer Charity win the vote but leaving a comment such as yours on a rival charity's page is not done old chap. Each charity has it's own merits and we should remember that others may not view your plea to vote for the PCC as appropriate. It's just a shame that all worthy charities cannot benefit from this free advertising but until that happens, lets play according to the rules and only leave comments on the page representing the charity we individually suppost. Thanks.

Yes we must clear landmines and assist the victims of landmines and cluster munitions. Love the little bear and hope the message is heard loud and clear!
Susan B. Walker | 12 June 2009
PS on comment below: this comes from someone who has done humanitarian work for the past 30 years, including tens of thousands of landmine and cluster munition victims around the world. PLEASE VOTE DAILY FOR MAG !!!
Susan B. Walker | 12 June 2009
Many lives and limbs are saved EVERY SINGLE DAY because of the work that MAG and other humanitarian demining organizations do around the world in 75 countries and 7 other areas where lives are threatened DAILY by landmines, cluster munitions and other unexploded ordnance. The clearance guys and gals RISK THEIR lives and limbs to SAVE THE LIVES AND LIMBS OF INNOCENT MEN, WOMEN and CHILDREN. This creative ad "uses the medium well" as it will get a CLEAR and easily readable message out to the entire London population (given the excellent bus system!), including politicians and civil servants who make decisions about such humanitarian matters and the general public who may not be aware of the issue and who can contribute financially, by volunteering their time and/or by pressuring the government to do the right thing. SO PLEASE VOTE DAILY and MAKE YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO MAG WINNING so they can GET THE HUMANITARIAN MESSAGE OUT. And then be thankful you do not live in a landmine / cluster munition / UXO-infested country.
Sardar | 12 June 2009
The advertisement really make sense because of the great aim behind it.. I were you I do not miss a day to vote..for nothing but for humanity sake and for those victims throughout the world who are suffering from the aftermaths of this damned weapon!

I think this is a simple, striking message that explains very succinctly what the organisation is about.
The teddy bear made me do a double take. Normally a cute, cuddly symbol, it drives home the ad's key message.
Smyth | 10 June 2009
I thought I'd slipped into a teenage forum on myspace or bebo when I saw some of these rather juvenile comments. This is a simple, effective concept. I "got" it immediately. It jumps out at you and the website address is easy to remember. Well done Charterhouse, nice design.

I have just read Jams comment, PATHETIC! I have seen MAGs work first hand when I was travelling around Cambodia and its an incredible dangerous job they do to help people rebuild their lives in safety. People like Jam should remember just how lucky they are living in a country free of these vicious weapons, instead of dreaming up venonmous comments about this fantastic organisation, wake up you pathetic muppet!

Great job of MAG to show the world in a "nice" way that there are still people including children and women who are victims of landmines and who are in need of support by clearing landmines and by helping the victims. Iraqi Kurdistan is greatly polluted with the problem. Thanks to MAG for its job here.

Great visual, gets my vote.
Tony | 03 June 2009
A very worthy cause but not sure that it is the most creative - Which is what the compitition is all about surely!
The horse and Cancer ones for me are the more creative and have a better impact visually.
The Cause shouldn't outway the reason for the compitition really.
Bosley | 02 June 2009

Great ad! MAG's branding works really well with the colours of the bus.
mark | 25 May 2009
Rab you've totally missed everyone's point again mate, not to worry though. :-)
don't get on your high horse about the advertising industry - this competition is not the same thing, it is a "creative" (note my inverted commas due to Mag's effort) challenge.
You know that creative thinking you're not so keen on? this is the place to do it - the place where it's encouraged.
And please don't make statements like 'sod the client, we're going to win awards' ? Firstly - No client will hand over large sums of money for a solution they are not happy with, that would be silly wouldn't it. But what would be more silly is them handing a brief to an agency and saying
"you best not come up with any award winning work with this, and stay away from that creative lark, we don?t want our products being talked about" :-)
we?ll leave it here Rab as there?s no point us arguing for the sake of it.
One thing we both agree on though is Mag?s entry isn?t creative (although they did try), therefore they probably shouldn?t be leading, and that?s all I was pointing out in the first place, so we?ll leave it there.
Cheers.
Rab | 25 May 2009
Mark, since you take me to task, let me put the other side of the argument. Too much advertising "creativity" (please note the inverted commas here and in my original - I know there is real creativity, just not nearly as much as the industry would like to believe) is just another way of saying "hey, we had fun, sod the client and the audience, let's win some awards". It's arrogant, self-serving and poisonous, and rather sad to see it's still apparently the norm. So mag will "get laughed at" in the next round? Quite possibly, by a bunch of "creatives". mag might also just be running, in the way they are handling this competition, a much more genuinely creative campaign than most of those sniggerers will manage in a lifetime. It's a free country, and good on mag for using every tool they can lay hands on to get THEIR job done. All the "creatives" can simply vote for the competition if they don't like it, instead of complaining about it. That's how a competition like this works, after all.
Wilson Bwambale | 23 May 2009
Great cause Let us all support it
DJ | 22 May 2009
No attempt to compete with any of the "clever" comments posted to date, just a positive vote from me. Viva MAG!
Vilaysack Paxaxay | 20 May 2009
I am working for MAG Laos programme and I am proud to be worked in this programme (same as my colleagues who work accross this world) to save lives and built futures for people who affected by UXO. So I vote for you MAG and hope we win. Good luck MAG.
jam | 20 May 2009
Penny
If the ad worked we'd all be donating. As a 'guerilla' exercise in promoting a charity within an award show the entry is successful. And I have absolutely no ill-feeling towards MAG for doing that, so fair play to them.
But, it is a shame for the award show that the winner isn't the most creative execution.
Clive | 20 May 2009
Congratulations Penny, you've submitted yet another ludicrous comment!
Using a link on the website is not praise for the ad, it simply explains why the ad has so many votes. This is a creative competition and the voters of this ad are clearly only voting for the cause and not the creativity!
It is clear this ad will undeservedly 'win' the wild card category, however that's as far as it goes. This ad will have no chance against real creative advertising!
Penny | 19 May 2009
Jam,
The very fact that you know there is a link on the MAG website proves that the ad works. Congratulations - they couldn't ask for higher praise!
jam | 19 May 2009
What a joke! Voting directly from a link on their website. As a creative idea this really isn't a worthy winner and has made a mockery of the whole competition.
I wonder how many people who have seen this bus-side have then felt compelled to donate?
Mark- please enter 'I love Jesus' so I can vote for that instead.
teobesta | 19 May 2009
i've been voting (religiously) every day and i'm so glad we're doing well
nice to be reminded once in awhile that there are people out there who do care
it helps when the design is so simple and effective

james | 19 May 2009
did that make sense? no it didnt. good stuff.
jim | 18 May 2009
As a consumer (of ads) the point of the ad is effectiveness 'Does message hit home?' and this does: the complaints are because it hurts when it works, which is the aim! It has my vote & support.
Adam | 18 May 2009
Everyone here seems to be missing the point? It's a nice ad but what's the reason it's on a bus side, this could work as a billboard or ad shel, it doesnt use the medium which surely was the brief?
ad | 16 May 2009
supposed to be voting for the cleverness of the design, not for the organisation!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark | 16 May 2009
Jake, sounds a fair idea; particularly using 'old and disregarded' friends. Alternatively one could deploy outmoded clones of Eliott Peterken.
Jake | 15 May 2009
Does MAG suggest that we clear landmines by throwing teddies on them? Not a bad idea!
ej | 15 May 2009
great cause - very uncreative ad - whats the competiton here? best cause or best creative????
Gill | 15 May 2009
Beth
Leave the cat advert alone, it is a fantastic ad, concentrate on your own ad and not knocking others!
Danny | 15 May 2009
Another positive vote for MAG from me despite the continuing unhelpful and negative comments!!!!!!!!!!
Toyah | 15 May 2009
Beth: why are you slagging off the cat advert - no one else has mentioned it!!! Leave the cat alone and concentrate on your own advert!! (Jealous are you?!!!!!)
Penny | 14 May 2009
Creativity isn't black and white, it's an opinion. People are free to express their opinion anyway they like and frankly I'm getting a little bored of being told that my opinion is wrong, purely because I have expressed it by hitting 'vote' on this ad.
Beth | 14 May 2009
Mark- please can you explain to us- who don't understand what they're voting for- how a picture of a cat is more creative than this ad???
mark | 14 May 2009
Rab: its a creative challenge - an exercise of creativity.
with this comment......
"I voted for it because I can see it working, not because it's highly "creative"
you have proved everyones point who have a problem with this ad being here. I doubt it's jealousy, its probably a mix of bewilderment and anger that MAG have used propogander to steamroll a creatively-led competition with an army of voters who arent understanding what they're voting for.
it's pointless mag winning this - it will never be 'a reality' ad they are promoting it on their website. When they go up against the agencies in the next round they will get laughed at and quietly disguarded. This isnt creative, it has no purpose in a creative competition - can you not see what people are pointing out here? I could just wack 'Jesus Loves You' on a bus T-Side and upload it right now. One link post to this in a religious facebook group and bobs your uncle, MAG are blown out of the water with Jesus votes in 1 day. Would that deserve to win in a creative competiton? absolutely not.
Great Cause. Wrong Place.
Rae | 14 May 2009
Great cause, great work, great advert .... for those who don't think the teddy bear works .... they clearly don't have the image perception of children, who understand totally.
Rab | 14 May 2009
Too many snide, insulting, and probably jealous, comments here ("friends, family..") trying to put down a clear and effective ad. I voted for it because I can see it working, not because it's highly "creative" (which usually means a triumph of ego over effectiveness). Evocative image, big explanatory web address, logo. It's good.
Bosley | 14 May 2009
My two young daughters are not at all badly affected by use of wounded Teddy depicting trauma, understand the message and love the ad. They hope it wins as do I.
Mark | 13 May 2009
Entrance states 'This is your chance to enter the London Creative Challenge.'
The cause in indubitably worthwhile.
The ad. is confusing. messy and just plain poor.
Sarah | 13 May 2009
Teddy bear not good, wrong medium for the portrayal of trauma. And because of this impressionable local children may be affected by such and connected adults therefore not willing to donate. This makes it that I cannot vote, sorry MAG. If possible to replace Teddy in the vertical slot before Judging then I would vote for you, as rest is good - large and clear to see.
Anna | 13 May 2009
Its a great, clear add with a simple and important message. It gets my vote and I hope it wins!
CONNEX | 13 May 2009
I'd be proud to drive a bus with both these logos on - two logos, one message!
Meredith | 13 May 2009
Jeez, who are the delusional people giving praise to this ad? It's not the worst ad I've ever seen, but it makes little sense and there is no reason for it to be on a bus side, which is surely the whole point to this competition.
Andrew | 13 May 2009
Sorry, guys. I understand it's for a good cause and all but I won't be voting broken teddy today. The idea isn't too bad but the execution is poor. Why are there two massive logos? Is this is a MAG ad or a clearlandmines.org ad?
Good luck with the campaign though.

Penny | 12 May 2009
Clive,
I think we must agree to disagree. I am using my vote to express my opinion as you are yours and therefore neither of us is right or wrong.
goalie | 12 May 2009
exactly what is needed from a design whatever the subject matter
DJ | 12 May 2009
This one certainly gets my vote for such a worthy cause. Incidentially, I thought that since 7 May all unhelpful comments had been discouraged?!
Tim | 12 May 2009
Simple clear easy to understand ad and a great cause - gets my vote
Clive | 12 May 2009
Penny,
that is correct, however it seems that others are not forcing votes, they are leaving it for people to vote depending on the ads quality! this ad is poor, the high percentage of votes is due to friends/family/colleagues. May I remind you this is a creative competition, not a competition to find out who has the most friends!
Penny | 12 May 2009
Clive,
Friends/family/colleagues are also able to play a part in the success of all the other entries as well. This one isn't subject to different rules to all the others.
Clive | 12 May 2009
poor ad, should never win.
friends/family/colleagues playing a big part in the success of this ad, which is wrong, the most creative ad should win! therefore this shouldn't stand a chance!
jam | 12 May 2009
A worth cause but not a worthy winner.
See last year's Cream/Fresh awards for a very similar idea from Bray Leino's Xmas card.
lensois ,french | 11 May 2009
it s very important cause ,but ,why the manchester united FC not put the logo in the teeshirt for only one match ,just cause ,to be good luck for this NGO
Erik H | 11 May 2009
Simple but clear design. Been there and saw it: innocence hurt. This is a worthy cause. Keep up the good work!
Danny | 11 May 2009
A powerful message in an eye-cathching design, which will hopefully provoke both discussions and actions.
wayne | 10 May 2009
Makes this important message accessable.
I particularly like the high profile inclusion of the existing MAG logo - which whenever seen on T shirts etc raises interest in the work of the organisation.
tostig | 09 May 2009
Powerful design, vital message. Vote for this one!
Andrew | 09 May 2009
..go for it...London is the place to get this message across...may even get a few MPs seeing it as they may be using buses more often now...they can help make changes....with our support and pressure...
Peter | 09 May 2009
This hopefully wil show ordinary people that we care what happens to every one affected by any sort of explosives devices
David | 09 May 2009
It wasn't the cause for me, it was the execution. Clear, dynamic, positive. Most importantly, it called for action.
Savita Akalu | 08 May 2009
Powerful design, will draw attention to the horrors people face around the world.
Vote you must.
Asif | 08 May 2009
The best design by far and a worthy cause!
Asif | 08 May 2009
The best design by far and a worthy cause!
Dan, Dan the Death Valley cycling man, Nov '08 | 08 May 2009
Quite simply the best, most simplistic and effectively designed message. Please vote MAG for a safer World.
Nhao | 08 May 2009
Everyone vote for MAG to save lives
King Ngoma Venance | 08 May 2009
Best it's the design, hoping it wins.Just go voting MAG ,for each one.
Russ | 07 May 2009
This is an excellent design that fulfils all criteria for a punchy, easily understood concept. The fact that MAG is also doing amazing work and saving hundreds of lives is a bonus. This is the best design in the bunch and I hope it wins outright!
laura | 07 May 2009
Some comments have been removed from this blog. Can I please remind all visitors that this is a creative competition ? if you have a comment relating to the creative execution then that is fair, however please refrain from adding unhelpful, offensive comments, which at the end of the day add nothing.
Everyone is entitled to their point of view but there are acceptable ways of expressing these, anything that is causing offensive will have to be removed. thanks
Maureen | 07 May 2009
Clear and concise - can be noted as the bus passes - hope hundreds will go to the website.
Eddy | 07 May 2009
Who think that every day that God made dozens of children and adults are injured by mines. Know one way or another is what matters to prevent that.
Md.Abu Bakar Siddique | 07 May 2009
I am saying for mines clearance in all over the world. At the same raise voice against mine uses for killing of human beings. It's really a great sin. We all are human being and all have right to lead a safe life.
Hikmat | 06 May 2009
I will say yes for mines clearance in all over world, mine is a killer
Frank | 06 May 2009
It is a very clear advert but to me, it is not the advert but the very important work that MAG does around the world that matters the most and I believe that any advert it has is a winner like they are.
william | 06 May 2009
pfff...some frustration here. I can only agree with Penny's message: the design influences Knowledge (landmine problem), Attitude (creates sympathy through the bear) and Behaviour (go to a website) in one. That's a good design in my opinion
Sean | 06 May 2009
A great, simple design with a clear message.
Penny | 06 May 2009
Advertising is intended to attract public attention to a product/business or, in this case, charity, to leave an impression and make you remember the product. You can't argue that this design doesn't fulfil the criteria.
JoW | 06 May 2009
Oh dear, are we finding it hard to separate the medium from the message? It's the one I want to see on a bus. Isn't that the measure of a good design?
Suren | 06 May 2009
Nice Idea, lovely
David | 06 May 2009
In your opinion!
Gill | 06 May 2009
poor design, no concept!
David | 06 May 2009
Forget the fact that it's an awesome cause, concentrate on the fact that it's simply the best design. Simple, clean, effective. The others just don't compare. It's a shame some people feel the need to leave negative comments on this page rather than positive comments on the one they like. And remember, design is subjective. Just because you prefer one of the others (or perhaps have a vested interest??) doesn't mean your favourite is the best design.
Neil | 06 May 2009
this is a creative competition not a competition to see who can advertise the 'kindest company'!! Just because this is for a good cause does not mean it must win.
This design will not stand a chance when competing with the regional winners! We must champion a design which will compete when taken to the next round of voting!
Lee | 06 May 2009
I agreed with Steve 100%
Poor standard compared to other ads in this category. It seems the creator has got his/her friends and colleagues to vote. Surely this doesn't deserve to win.
Kellie | 06 May 2009
An inspiring charity with a clear and thoughtprovoking message, fingers crossed it wins.
Denis Muasse | 06 May 2009
I vote for MAG to win a london bus ad campaign and help saves lives.
MA | 06 May 2009
I am realy support it ! hope it make change
Dominic Bianconi | 06 May 2009
I hope your ad goes far to support all the great work the team is doing. With out you's many more lives would be ruined all over the globe. Win or not keep up the good work.
Cliff Allen | 06 May 2009
To anyone who has faced these horrors head on as I have. This has got to be a very effective way of helping to put an end to it.
David | 05 May 2009
This is a great cause. However, on purely design terms this is easily the best ad in the competition - simple yet thought provoking. Gets the entire message across in one web address and has a stunning image that realy makes you think twice. I hope it wins on design grounds. The face that it's promoting such a worthwhile cause is a happy bi-product.
Beth | 05 May 2009
A brilliant and effective campaign to raise awareness of the horrors of landmines. This entry deserves to win. Vote for MAG!
Brian | 05 May 2009
This worthwhile work to rid the world o0f mines deserves the widest publicity
S. Ramamurthy | 05 May 2009
A truly important message, clearly stated.
Ernst | 05 May 2009
Steve your comment does not deserve the FEET you are standing on mate............SORRY folks..............we work with this DAILY
Abel Tesfai | 05 May 2009
Great ad. Not only the brand colour matches with the london bus but also in side deep it clearly illustarte the the bad legacy of war and ways of stopping it.
South Sea Island Danny | 05 May 2009
This must win as far too many lives are affected worldwide by these discarded munitions, and it is our responsibility to highlight these horrors and help in any way we can. VOTE MAG, VOTE MAG, VOTE MAG.
Nick | 05 May 2009
A very clear message will be seen by thousands of people that can stand on 2 feet, clever, I like it, vote for MAG.
JoW | 05 May 2009
Does what it says on the bus - good luck to this design!
Steve | 05 May 2009
Poor standard compared to other ads in this category. It seems the creator has got his/her friends and colleagues to vote. Surely this doesn't deserve to win.
william | 04 May 2009
brand colours fit well with the colours of the bus - clear message raising curiosity and a call to action by showing a clear and easy to remember website. well done!
ed | 02 May 2009
to the point, direct, clear - an emotive and thoughtprovoking ad
Zoe | 02 May 2009
Definitely needs to win. An important cause plus a great design. Vote now!
Sandra Dee | 02 May 2009
Simple, effective, powerful advertising... and needless to say for a worthy cause. This deserves a to win, and MAG can get that much needed public awareness and support.
Stephen Kirby | 02 May 2009
Powerful image and powerful message - hope you win!
Karl | 02 May 2009
This design looks like a winner to me - go for it!
Brenda | 01 May 2009
A good use of space to promote this cause.
The design is the best of its kind to date.
DB | 01 May 2009
Not a real contender given the quality of some of the entries here. The cause is worthy but the ad is weak in this company.
Matt Kirby | 01 May 2009
A great way to draw attention to a fantastic cause. I hope it wins.
Jersey Danny | 01 May 2009
What a fantastic, simplistic yet effective design. Please everyone vote for MAG!!!!!
Barbara | 01 May 2009
Hope it will make people think about the horrors that go on in our world
Lisa | 01 May 2009
Lesley,
I promise I will get on this bus if it wins ! Please vote everyone!
Steven | 01 May 2009
What an incredibly good way to show the horrors children around the world face every day
Penny | 01 May 2009
A brilliantly simple and effective design.
